What do you think of Abraham as being from India? India's heritage and culture are much, much older than either Judaism or Christianity or Islam, so it makes some sense that a Brahman's emigration from India (Brahma-Abraham) took place ... the entire Bible story originating from the distortions of history, watered down at best.

Thanks for writing with your question. You asked me what I think, so I'm going to tell you exactly what I think.

The speculation that Abram was from India has no confirmation from any source. On the other hand, Genesis (11:26-32) and a number of other ancient sources all tell us that Abraham was a native of "Ur of the Chaldees" which was located in ancient Sumerian Mesopotamia in the Fertile Crescent. Samaria is often called the "cradle of civilization" since it produced the first cities and the first writing - predating Egypt, India or any other postdiluvian culture. The section of Genesis that reports on Abram's father Terah and his family, beginning with the word's "Now this is the history of the generations of Terah" is an original family history from the time period and location on which it is reporting, that is, from "Ur of the Chaldees" of Abraham's day. Nothing could be more authoritative than this as to Abraham's family origins. (Gen 11:27)

Gill's commentary sums up some of the other ancient documentation regarding Abram's origins:

[Haran, Abram's brother died] in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees; Ur, which Ben Melech renders a valley, was the place of his birth, as it was of Abram's; it was in Mesopotamia, that part of it next to Assyria being called the land of the Chaldeans; hence these are spoken of as the same by Stephen, Act_7:2 mention is made by Pliny (b), of a place in those parts called Ura, which seems to be the same with this: Eupolemus (c) says,"that Abram was born at Camarine, a city of Babylon, some call Urie, and is interpreted a city of the Chaldeans;''now Camarine is from "Camar", to heat or burn, and Ur signifies fire, so that both words are of the same signification: Josephus (d) says, that Haran died among the Chaldeans, in a city called Ur of the Chaldees, where, he adds, his grave is shown to this day.." (b) Nat. Hist. l. 5. c. 24. (c) Apud Euseb. Praepar. Evangel. l. 9. c. 17. p. 418. (d) Antiqu. l. 1. c. 6. sect. 5. (e) Shalshalet, fol. 2. 1, 2. Jarchi in loc.

I will excuse your dismissive assumptions regarding the Bible on the grounds that you obviously haven't really studied it. As one who has devoted a life-time to the study of Scripture I will tell you this: The Scriptures contain solid historical truth that can be entirely relied upon. This is true regarding Abraham, and everything else the Scriptures talk about. This has been superabundantly proven and continues to be proven daily. Those who do not hold a careful and complete study of Scripture as their primary intellectual foundation (against which they test all other knowledge) remain fundamentally uneducated, and therefore ignorant, no matter what else they think they know. The Bible is the truth. Ignore or minimize it at your own peril.

Listener Comment - The Big Picture DVD
   Just finished watching "The Big Picture" - and I love it. It is just what I need in order to put things together. I say, "need," as I am not at the point where I have it down pat, and I really need to read the WORD, study what you have said, and ruminate on it. I love the art work you use on the video. It adds a dimension to it as you take in what is being said. You and Dawn both have a daunting task before you, and certainly need all of our prayers, as well as us spreading the word, but GOD never starts something HE is not able to finish, and HE uses us to do the task. Quite remarkable!!
   I told my family they have to sit and listen to it with notebook in hand, and not allow anything to disturb them - really take in the message. I believe this is the only way people will begin to understand what is being said. I doubt very much if I would have been open to this message 20 or 30 yrs. ago. If the LORD hadn't already showed me, from HIS WORD, "Who Is A Jew" and how that all goes together, I doubt very much that I would have understood it then. We just have to be prepared by our LIVING GOD. HE never fails, and HIS timing is essential.
