Read - Announcing: Judgment Day

Listener Comments - Did Judas repent?
Could you please help me to understand Acts 1:18 regarding Judas' death? Also pertaining to that ...Matthew 27:3 ...did Judas repent? or was he just filled with remorse for his actions?

Tsiyon Answer - Did Judas repent?

This is the "remorse" of Judas:

Then Judah(Judas), who betrayed him, when he saw that Yeshua was condemned, felt remorse, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.. Matt 27:3

When a person involves himself/herself in a serious sin involving a plot, such as the sin of betrayal, conspiracy to commit murder or robbery, or some other such conspiracy, they may not think through the full ramifications for what they have done. The reasons for this are varied. Sometimes they rationalize themselves as being justified in their actions because of some perceived wrong done toward them or some perceived inequity or injustice justifying their crime in their own mind. Very often, underlying these justifications are the negative motivators of envy and jealousy, which can be very powerful emotions, blinding the mind of the perpetrator from the full ramifications and evil of the conspiracy.

However, once the conspiracy progresses reality pushes through, and the betrayer begins to see the awful results and sinfulness of the plot that they have participated in. At this point a horror may overcome the perpetrator at their own involvement in the crime, which they now understand will be exposed to all. This is a remorse of a sort. This remorse is of the self-serving kind, being a realization that the plot will inevitably fall back upon the heads of all those who have participated in it. At that point the perpetrator attempts to step back from association with the crime. That is what Judas did by throwing the "price of blood" back "into the sanctuary."

One source explains the meaning of the Greek word here translated as "remorse" in Matthew 27:3:

This verb (first aorist passive participle of metamelomai) really means to be sorry afterwards like the English word repent from the Latin repoenitet, to have pain again or afterwards. [RWP]

This is a feeling of being sorry - but a feeling of being sorry is not enough to qualify as "repentance to salvation." Paul explains this for us:

For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world works death. 2 Cor 7:10

"Godly sorrow" is a good thing. It brings about a change of heart that is manifest in a change of behavior unto "salvation."

"Worldly sorrow" falls short of that. It is the all too familiar "I'm sorry" I got caught! This "worldly sorrow" is of no real substance, and "works death" in the betrayer, as it did in Judas.

Judas tried to give the price of betrayal back to the priests who were the architects of the plot. They would not take the money, so he threw it in the sanctuary (Matt 27:5).

After that Judas went away and hanged himself in the potter's field. (Matt 27:5,7). Acts gives us more details. Apparently, when he hanged himself, perhaps on the edge of some precipice, the rope broke "and falling headlong, his body burst open, and all his intestines gushed out." Act 1:18

Either before or after that event the priests took the money Judas had thrown in the sanctuary and bought the potter's field with it (Matt 27:6-8).

Now this man obtained a field with the reward for his wickedness. (Act 1:18)

"Obtained" here does not mean he personally bought the field. Note this:

Obtained (ektēsato).             First aorist middle indicative of ktaomai, to acquire, only in the middle, to get for oneself. With the covenant money for the betrayal, acquired it indirectly apparently according to Matt 26:14-16; Matt 27:3-8 which see. [RWP]

In other words, he obtained the field of his own death in the sense of it being purchased with his blood money, though the actual transaction was completed by the priests.

All in all, the story of Judas is a sad and miserable story that stands as an eternal monument of warning against the despicable sin of betrayal.

Listener Comments - "Powerful forces" against Tsiyon

Dear Dawn and Eliyahu, I have been in a spiritual battle over you and the ministry most of the day. There are powerful forces out there trying to destroy you. I know of one member who contacted several other members against you. I am grieved. When will we let go of all these fleshly things and move on? I want you to know that [my husband] and I both love you very much. He feels like this all has happened because you were told ..the fences should come down. They are and now we are all waiting. We know that you speak the truth. Your books are right on. Father told us to wait and so we are waiting and praying. Shalom to both of you.

Tsiyon Answer - "Powerful forces" against Tsiyon

Thank you for your love, your spiritual warfare on our behalf, and your support of this ministry. It is always distressing when those who have been beloved to us as brothers and sisters betray us as infiltrators and enemies. We must not be surprised by this, however, since Messiah foretold such betrayal as among the signs of these final days. We are aware of the activities of the evildoers, but we have no need to defend ourselves or to fight back at this time. Yah has given us perfect peace to wait while these attacks continue, since Yah is using this to separate from our midst those who do not belong with us. So like you, we continue to wait on YHWH, while occupying ourselves with the work He has given to bless His remnant people and to lift up His mighty Name. Thank you so much for standing with us. We stand on the Rock with you and all of His true Remnant People. What harm can man do to us?

From Eliyahu

Once again we turn to Ezekiel to expose the idols that need to be torn down. You might want to spend some time in prayer BEFORE listening to this program, because it may challenge you beyond anything you've heard here at Tsiyon so far. I know it hurts, but every idol must be pulled down, including this one.

Shalom,

Eliyahu ben David
