In Galatians 4 Rabbi Sha'ul a/k/a Apostle Paul presents a
teaching from key verses in Genesis 21. Since our latest
EBD Bet Midrash #019 deals with this chapter of Genesis, and
because the true sense of Galatians 4 is not accurately
conveyed by available Bible translations, Eliyahu ben David has
created a paraphrase translation of Galatians 4 especially for use
with this latest program. The translation errors of popular Bibles
thus revealed in this section of Scripture illustrate why Paul is so

Listener Question - What
do you believe about Messiah?
Q. I love your Torah teaching. Do you folks believe
that Christ already came and died for our sins, was crucified, died,
went under the earth, was raised from the dead and ascended to the
heavens and is sitting at the right hand of the Father? If not and
why and please provide your proof of your belief.
Tsiyon Answer: Thanks for writing. I'm glad you are enjoying our
Torah teaching. The Torah gives us a foundation of instruction on
which the rest of the Scriptures are built. We see all of the
Scriptures, from Genesis through Revelation, as one harmonious
revelation from YHWH. In our view the "New Testament" simply
continues the revelation already given. In that sense it is not
"new" at all. Rather, it simply shows the fulfillment of the Torah
and the Prophets in the person, work, and community of Y'shua the
Messiah.
Sha'ul (Apostle Paul) was an anointed Torah scholar who, rightly
understood and translated, makes many of these connections with the
Torah and Prophets for us throughout his letters, showing how these
are fulfilled with the coming of Messiah. He said this regarding his
confession:
Now I declare to you, brothers, the Good News which I preached to
you, which also you received, in which you also stand, by which also
you are saved, if you hold firmly the word which I preached to
you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all
that which I also received: that Messiah died for our sins according
to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the
third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Kefa
(Peter), then to the twelve. Then he appeared to over five hundred
brothers at once, most of whom remain until now, but some have also
fallen asleep. Then he appeared to Jacob, then to all the
emissaries, and last of all, as to the child born at the wrong time,
he appeared to me also. 1 Cor 15:1-8
Paul is here witnessing to the fact that Messiah (Christ) came, died
for our sins and then was raised from the dead. Paul says that there
were over five hundred of the brothers, most still alive when he
wrote, who were eye-witnesses to that fact! This is the living
Messiah I believe in, whom I also serve.
A number of places in Scripture tell us that He ascended into heaven
to sit at the right hand of the Father. He Himself said:
No one has ascended into heaven, but he who descended out of
heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven. Yochanan/John
3:13
This is also our confession, that He rules from heaven, and that
soon He shall return to receive His own, to judge the world, and to
rule His Kingdom from Jerusalem.
I hope that this will adequately confirm our faith in Messiah for
you. Without Him, everything else we teach is essentially worthless.
He is at the center of everything we believe, teach and do - praise
His name!

As we midrash together through Genesis I am finding all of it of
vital importance in these days, but I find that I connect with some
parts of it in a more personal way than with some other parts.
Perhaps you are having that same experience. Genesis 21 along with
Paul's teaching on that, in Galatians 4, powerfully connects with me
in a deeply personal way - making me so desirous of sharing the
depth of this message with you. My hope is that you will be uplifted
and blessed by the amazing freedom offered to you in these passages
- which freedom is made real only through Y'shua Messiah. You are
meant to be an heir of the promise rather than a slave to concepts
of mere men - and I pray, as you take in this message, you will more
fully appropriate that blessed freedom in your own life than ever
before.
