From Eliyahu
Dear friends,
No doubt about it, there is a lot of bad news in the media. So much, in fact, that many people don't want to hear it any more, so just don't read, listen to or watch "the news". Frankly, from time to time I just tune it out myself, to concentrate on more positive things. This last week though, I could not ignore the news coming out of Israel about the barbaric attack using guns, knives, axes and meat cleavers against unarmed rabbis peacefully praying in their synagogue in Jerusalem. If you somehow missed this news, you can watch a news video about it here.
Dawn and I received an email from an Israeli contact (who does not yet know Y'shua as Messiah) who lives in Israel who personally knows some of the victims. Excerpts follow:
I was watching the morning talk show this morning when all of a sudden there
was a news update - terrorists had burst into a synagogue in Jerusalem and
people had been killed. As the details came in, we learned that two terrorists,
armed with guns, axes and butcher knives, attacked men during their prayers.
They were in the middle of the silent prayer, immersed in silent and serious
communication with the G-d of Israel, not paying attention to what was around
them, until the noise and the mayhem interfered. They ran, fought back and
called for help. But within minutes, four people had been murdered. Several
others were wounded seriously, including a policeman who was the first on the
scene. All four men lived on the same street. They left four widows and a total
of 24 children between them (death toll is now at least 5 victims murdered, many wounded, plus two terrorists killed).
One of the murdered men was Rabbi Moshe Twersky. Originally from the US, he
was the grandson of Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveichik, one of the greatest rabbis and
Jewish thinkers of the 20th century. His father was also a great rabbi and professor of Jewish studies at Harvard University in Boston. Rabbi Moshe
Twersky was an important rabbi in his own right, head of a Jerusalem yeshiva.
Rabbi Moshe's aunt is a friend of mine and we study Bible together. His uncle was my sons' teacher and rabbi.
Another murdered man was Rabbi Kalman Levine. He had also made aliyah from
the US. His wife, now his widow, is Marilyn. I grew up with Marilyn in Cleveland,
OH. She is a few years younger than me and her cousin lives across the street
from me here in Karnei Shomron. I always enjoyed catching up with her at her
cousin's celebrations. This week, when I pay a condolence call to her, the
atmosphere will be totally different. What will I say to her, as she sits shiva (in
mourning) for her husband of more than 30 years? How do you comfort her 9
children and 5 grandchildren on the loss of their father and grandfather in the
middle of his morning prayers?
..They were all wonderful people who left close family members who will mourn them the rest of their days. But what Israelis and Jews all over the world are asking today is why it is that when Jews are killed, the international media and national leaders everywhere rush to "explain' the context - it is Israeli "radicals" who have the audacity to want to visit and even pray on the Temple Mount. It is Israelis who are building new homes in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria.Well, I'd like to set the record straight. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and there is only one people on this earth who have called Jerusalem their own for more than 3,000 years - the Jewish people! And our roots in Judea and Samaria go back 4,000 years. And the Temple Mount is the holiest place for the Jewish
people and has been for more 2,500 years. So why wouldn't we want to pray
there? ..Only the most despicable and immoral of human beings would attack people as they are praying.
..I pray that G-d will bring comfort to these four families, a speedy recovery to the injured, wisdom to the people of civilized countries everywhere to recognize evil where it resides and the courage to fight against it where and when it rears its head.
The senseless murder of Jewish people as racist and religious hate crimes is on the rise, not only in Jerusalem, but in countries around the world. Why is that? It is because the Book identifies them with the God of Israel and therefore satan hates them! In that, we must identify with them and pray for the victims and survivors of such senseless attacks. Some people do not agree, saying the majority of Jewish people are hardened against Y'shua as Messiah of Israel, and some oppose Messianic believers, so are not worthy of believer's prayers. I would remind those folks of these words:
For I don’t desire you to be ignorant, brothers, of this mystery, so that you won’t be wise in your own conceits, that a partial hardening has happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles [the scattered remnant of Israel, Gen 48:19] has come in, and so all Israel will be saved. Even as it is written,
“There will come out of Zion the Deliverer,
and he will turn away ungodliness from Jacob.
This is my covenant to them,
when I will take away their sins.”
Concerning the Good News, they are enemies for your sake. But concerning the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sake. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. (Romans 11:25-29)
Yes, they "are beloved for the fathers’ sake" so that we must pray for them and stand with them in the face of the growing demonic hatred now being directed against them from every side. Indeed, we are horrified at these barbaric attacks and pray mercy and shalom upon their surviving families and friends and the whole Jewish people. One day before very long we, the believing remnant of Israel, will return to Israel in the second exodus. When we do, I pray that we will stand strong and proud of our Messiah, while at the same time being recognized as brothers and friends of the Jewish people, many of whom have born the brunt of the fight to liberate the Land. YHWH has a plan to deliver them - and we are part of it! With YHWH, may we love them "for the fathers’ sake."
Now, a word about our latest EBDBM Bet Midrash, which details the duties of the Levites each time the Tabernacle was to be moved. Here, we learn more about the order of the camp of Israel on the move. What could be more relevant to the Remnant as we look forward to the second exodus?
Blessings and Shalom,
Eliyahu Ben David
