This
week I've been thinking about controversy, and just plain arguing. One
reason is, I've been studying John 4 + 5 for tonight's meeting - a portion
that includes a lot of controversy. Another reason is the tragic and highly
divisive events of this last week that have been in the news, dividing this
nation I live in into angry factions. The truth is, I'm not hearing a lot of
reason, but there is a lot of inflammatory rhetoric. We've always had some
of that, of course, but it is now getting more ugly than ever. What is
really going on, from a Biblical perspective?
I
think there is something to be learned from the controversy Yeshua was
involved in, as we find it in John 4 + 5. One thing that jumps out of the
Biblical narrative is that Yeshua simply did what was right. In His case
that involved healing people on the Sabbath, which happened to be contrary
to the rules of the religious and ruling elite. This brought on controversy,
but that was not why He did it. He simply did the right thing and let the
chips fall where they may. This boldness for righteous behavior was in
marked contrast to the crowd, most of whom would never risk bringing the
disfavor of the powerful against themselves. The timid acquiescence and
suppression of righteousness by the crowd didn't really help them, since it
simply emboldened the overlords to become ever-more oppressive and corrupt,
eroding the underpinnings of that society, eventually bringing it to the
point of catastrophic collapse. Yeshua did not think the good He was doing
would save the nation from that inevitable outcome. On the contrary, He
warned of that certain end many times. He would save only a remnant who
would respond to the Kingdom message. He had a higher purpose, and that is
what governed His behavior.
In
these last days we have a similar situation. The factions we see forming in
this world, though in many cases hating each other, are not really the cause
of the controversy. As in Yeshua's day, it is the agenda of a corrupt and
oppressive elite that is actually driving the pressures on society that are
making all of this discord happen. We already know from Scripture where this
is going, and where it will end. As with Yeshua, we too need to be concerned
with simply doing the right thing - what YHWH says is right, and let the
chips fall where they may. Yeshua did not join violent factions, or even
political factions, as a supposed solution. He knew that whole system was in
its death-throws and could not be saved. He walked and lived in the Kingdom,
not in the darkness of this world. He expressed the love of YHWH to everyone
who would receive it, and meant harm to nobody. He told us to do the same,
saying; "Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves." This still works, and
needs to be who we are in this world. Why? Consider this:
Don’t love the world, neither the
things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s
love isn’t in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh,
the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, isn’t the Father’s, but is
the world’s. The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who
does Elohim’s will remains forever. 1 John 2:15-17
"The
world is passing away." The world can't be saved. America is part of the
world, so America can't be saved either. America had an honored role in the
world for a time, but that was then and this is now. America is not the
Savior. America is just as lost, maybe even more lost, than those it has
sought to lead. Face the facts. Don't get embroiled in arguments about how
to arrange the deck furniture on a sinking ship. Don't waste your time
polishing the brass on a doomed Titanic. What you are witnessing all around
you is the end of the world as you have known it, unfolding before your
eyes. It's taking water fast. Nothing can stop the flooding of selfishness
and evil. It's going under, and it will inevitably sink to the bottom. Like
Yeshua did, you will just have to let it sink, because reality will have
it's way. We who are truly His are not about this world - we are about His
Kingdom. let us be busy saving a remnant who still can be saved out of this
reeling world, before that nauseating sucking sound you are hearing comes to
its last belch, taking this old world to the bottom! The time for action is
now! Man the lifeboats and get to work saving whomever you can! Do it now,
because the soul you save may be your own.
Yeshua coming into the world was a sign of
doom for the wicked, but a beacon of hope for the humble and the righteous.
This is still true. Yeshua and His Kingdom has always been, and still is,
the only real hope of mankind. If we've proven anything in the last 6,000
years it is this: we can't rule ourselves, we need His Kingdom. Come quickly
Yeshua. We long for your Kingdom to cover the globe with your righteousness
and truth! Help us rise above the fray, to stand solidly for you and with
you in these last days!
