The Corona virus is a merciless killer. Right now, America is the country with the most reported cases and the most reported deaths. I say "reported" because there is a lot of reason to believe China's numbers were grossly under-reported. Be that as it may, America is currently suffering more cases and more deaths than any other country. We just passed the 20,000 deaths mark, almost all of them within about 6 weeks. That figure is far less than it would have been if it were not for a heroic effort by the citizens of the country to deny the virus access to more bodies. As contagious as this monster virus is, one can only imagine how many more people would have died by now had aggressive mitigation efforts not been undertaken. Even so, 20,000 deaths is a chilling number in so short a time, underscored by the specter of the dead, stacked three high in continuous rows, being laid out in mass graves in New York City. It is a gruesome and tragic reality for thousands of the friends and family of the untimely dead. Nothing like this has ever been seen here in my lifetime. 

The mitigation efforts have come at a great personal cost to many. Jobs are being lost, businesses that took lifetimes to build are closed down. Despite huge infusions of cash in amounts never before imagined, the economy hangs in the balance. It is a weird thing to see massive rows of stylish late model cars lined up for blocks on end, waiting to receive boxes of food from food banks, charities and churches. Formerly upper and middle class working families are now reduced to charity just to eat. The sheer scale of the rapid and bizarre changes we all are experiencing together boggles the mind to behold. It is as if one day we all woke up on a different planet, and now we don't even recognize where we are.

People are sitting in their rooms, apartments and homes, as they have for weeks now, wondering what comes next, worrying about the future. It is not only the Coronavirus and the economy they are worried about. They wonder, "will I ever really get my freedom back?".

We have all had to give up a lot of freedom to fight this monster virus. Before now it would have been inconceivable to imagine the government micro-managing our personal lives by decree, right down to how and where we breath, as has happened and is happening in countries all over the globe right now. This worry about our future is not an empty conspiracy theory, or personal nightmare. Since the 21st century began we have seen a number of global shocks leaving massive ripples around the world that are still felt today. 9/11 comes to mind. After that day everything changed forever. The Patriot Act was passed here in America that set the stage for massive surveillance and tracking of citizens - an entirely un-American denial of privacy and loss of liberty that we have had to live with ever since. Layered over that were the staggering effects of the global economic melt-down of 2008 that saw the banks bailed out on the backs of the working men and women of the world. The aftermath put all of us under a sort of forced labor benefiting only the super-wealthy from which we still have not emerged. By now we have already been reduced to a slave planet constrained by an invisible cage generated by technology, though many of us don't even know it, because sophisticated technical language is used to cover up the truth. However, being watched and tracked all the time, to be exploited and farmed by an elite class - that is the very definition of slavery itself.

And now this. What will the aftermath of this look like? Will all the bureaucrats, officials and tyrants willingly relinquish the unprecedented levels of social control they have come to wield? Tyranny is very efficient. That's why control freaks love it. Do we really think they will all just give that up? Likely, they will be forced to let up some, but as with 9/11 and 2008, there will be a residual layer of control, layered over the earlier loss of freedoms, constricting our lives even more. In your heart of hearts you already know that, which is why you are worried about your loss of freedom.

This picture is especially bleak for all Bible-believing people right now, and I will tell you why. The Bible is the book of truth and freedom. It is where human society learned about freedom in the first place. All tyrants hate the Bible, and they hate everyone associated with the Bible, whether Jews, Christians or Messianic believers. Yeshua came to give us freedom, so they hate Him most of all. A tyrannical darkness is descending over the world and it wants to stamp out truth and freedom, replacing them with a technocratic system of deception and control. Evil must have its ultimate day, and that day will put faith to the test on a global level that is entirely unprecedented. All of this is in the Bible. How we must deal with it is in the Bible too. The story of how faith will triumph over tyranny is also in the Bible, and that is the happy part of the story.

Truth and freedom are in the Bible. Its all there, for those whose eyes have been opened by the omnipresent Spirit of Elohim. As we see the darkness overtaking the world we know it is time to pray. Messiah told us this, and told us to use this time to pray. He said:

"Therefore be watchful all the time, praying that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.” Luke 21:36

At our live-streamed meeting tonight we shall be watchful, as Messiah said, taking a good look at what is going on around us, and how we are dealing with it. We will also pray, as He said we should pray, about escaping "all these things that will happen" so that we might get through these dark times "to stand before the Son of Man."
