In
our last Tsiyon News we began writing about Bible prophecy being fulfilled in the State of Israel, and with
her neighbor countries in the region. In that article I offered a brief
history of Israel, David, and the Temple over the last 3000 years - and the
relationship of all of that to Bible prophecy in our day. That article lays
the groundwork for what I'm sharing here today. If you would like to read
that, you can find it here:
Tsiyon News. The point established by all of that history is this: there
is an undying connection between the Davidic Dynasty and the Temple of YHWH.
Also in that Tsiyon News, Scriptural support showing that even though the
Temple was destroyed almost 2000 years ago, Bible prophecy demands that a
Third Temple must exist in the Last Days, before Messiah's Return. We pick
up that thread here with this question: Is there any indication that the building of a Third Temple
in Jerusalem is getting closer to being built? There definitely is!
In
early 2005, Eilat Mazar from Jerusalems Hebrew University began to dig in an
area called "The City of David" south of the Temple Mount. There she
discovered foundations of a large palace from the 10th century BCE, the
period of King David, which matches the Biblical description and location of
the Palace of King David. During the excavation, many bullae (clay seal
impressions) were found, bearing Hebrew names, named in the Bible, as
servants and officials of the Davidic kings. As work continued at the site,
Mazar excavated a tower which was part of the city walls from the days of
Nehemiah, during the Second Temple period. Excavations in the southern part
of the City of David, uncovered the Second Temple period Shiloah Pool,
mentioned in the Gospels. Also, the main road on which Temple pilgrims
walked up northwards towards the Temple Mount, from the City of David, was
uncovered. A water channel that passed beneath the road was discovered, with
finds inside the channel testifying to the days of the Great Revolt against
the Romans and the subsequent destruction of Jerusalem.
At
the City of David too many artifacts of Biblical importance have been found
that it would be impossible for me to list them all here. One outstanding
example connecting the City of David with the Temple is truly amazing. It is
a rare gold bell with a small loop at its end, discovered during an
archaeological excavation in the drainage channel that begins in the Shiloah
Pool, and continues from the City of David to the Jerusalem Archaeological
Garden, near the Western Wall, near the entrance to the destroyed Temple
grounds. The golden bell matches the Biblical description of the golden
bells attached to the fringe of the garment of the High Priest!
It is
mind-boggling to realize all of this evidence for the truth of the Biblical
record regarding the Davidic Dynasty, the City of David, and the First and
Second Temple has laid in the ground unknown and untouched for millennia -
until now - exactly at the right time in these Last Days. These discoveries,
together with many others, are creating a lot of momentum in Israel for the
construction of a Third Temple. In fact, more is happening in this regard
than many of us may be aware of.
Perhaps
you have heard of the Temple Institute in Jerusalem, a Jewish organization
dedicated to the rebuilding of the Temple on the Temple Mount. The Orthodox
Jews involved believe the present problems plaguing the world, as well as
the problems now confronting the Jewish people, will be solved only by
building a Third Temple on the Temple Mount. The Institute has formulated a
complete program identifying where the Temple will stand, with detailed
research into the complexities of construction of both the Temple and its
objects, with architectural plans at the ready, all informed by 20 men who
study Temple law full-time. Temple objects already constructed, numbering at
least 40 ritual objects are on display in Plexiglas cases at the institute
headquarters in the Old City, testifying to the seriousness of this project.
Vestments for priests and the high priest are already created and ready for
use in the rebuilt Temple. The high priest vestments, complete with azure
woven-work with gold thread, and a breastplate with 12 precious stones are
created and ready for use. This project alone took 11 years of research and
$150,000 to complete. As impressive as that is, it pales in comparison to
the 200-pound, seven-branch menorah that is destined for the "Holy of
Holies" of the Third Temple. That amazing object is currently on display at
the Temple Institute, and is fashioned completely of gold. The gold alone of
that one object is valued at something like $4,000,000 (four million
dollars) US! As these facts well illustrate, the Institute has support from
all over the world, much of it in high places. In Israel, the Temple
Institute enjoys the support of the nascent Sanhedrin, which is itself
growing in acceptance and favor in Israel.
Speaking of
the nascent Sanhedrin, they have been taking major steps to move toward
building the Third Temple. In 2018, the nascent Sanhedrin court of 71 Jewish
elders, released a letter in Hebrew, English and Arabic inviting the Arabs
as the sons of Ishmael to take a role in supporting the Third Temple. The
letter was sent to major Arab institutions and leaders. Rabbi Shtern,
spokesman for the Sanhedrin, explained:
Every
religion has a belief in moshiach (Messiah), in an end to one reality
and the beginning of a new reality. In this new reality, every person,
every religion, has their place and their purpose.
Also
in 2018, the nascent Sanhedrin released a declaration to the 70 nations
(meaning all Gentile nations) for Hanukkah to be read at a ceremony
involving the consecration of a stone altar prepared for use in the Third
Temple. The declaration is intended as an invitation to the nations to
participate in the Temple and to receive its blessings. The dedication
ceremony was a joint effort between the nascent Sanhedrin and the Temple
Institute. Spokesman Rabbi Weiss explained:
It
is fitting that we should invite the nations to the ceremony since
Hanukkah is about bringing light to the darkness. The Jews were meant to
do this for the entire world.
The nascent
Sanhedrin is also seeking political support in Israel for building a Third
Temple. In 2018 an election for Mayor of Jerusalem was held. It came down to
a run-off between Moshe Lion (who ultimately prevailed) and Ofer Berkovitch.
Significantly, the nascent Sanhedrin wrote an open letter to the two men,
stating in part:
With
Gods merciful approval, one of you will be chosen as head of the city,
may it be built and made ready for its ultimate purpose ... We call on
the candidates as well as the voters to make choices based on truth and
on the main aspect of Jerusalem, which is the building of the Temple ...
Jerusalem must be prepared to host the millions of pilgrims who will
attend the feasts when the Third Temple is built.
With
Jerusalem now officially recognized by the USA as the capital of Israel,
with its embassy located there, and with other countries following suit, and
with multiple Arab countries now making peace with Israel, it is clear that
a lot of ground has been gained on the path toward a Third Temple. The
Scriptures don't tell us exactly how that will finally happen, and some ups
and downs in the process are inevitable, but you can be sure it WILL happen.
No doubt the motives for building the Third Temple are sincere, but
Bible-believers know that the effort to involve all nations with the Temple
will end with the coming world-ruler, commonly known as "antichrist",
exerting his domination of the world from his seat in the Temple, "setting
himself up as God." (2 Thessalonians 2:1-5)
Clearly, all
of this momentum toward building a Third Temple on the Temple Mount is
unprecedented, and is itself evidence that we are moving ever closer to the
final events of this final generation.
