Consider this:

 

When did you learn you don't fit in? For a lot of us, that message first arose when we went to school. Yes, very early in life, as a child, the fact that "I am somehow different" became obvious. But what was that difference? If you were shorter, taller, fatter or skinnier than others you might have thought that was the difference. If your ears, nose, chin, belly or butt was bigger or smaller than others you may have thought that was it. If you were from a richer, or poorer, family than others, that might have seemed to be the difference. That's the simple stuff. What if you were ethnically different, racially different or religiously different? What if you were some combination of any of the above? You literally could have gotten a punch in the face because of any of those things. If you did, that was still not as bad as the ridicule and ostracism of your fellow-students in school. Fitting in can be a pretty big deal for a kid.

 

Of course, once you grew up all that was behind you, right? Maybe, but maybe not. Maybe that sense of not fitting in kept popping up in your life from time to time, or even, all the time. Maybe you found a place where you could sort of fake it, to get by, but you still didn't really feel like you fit in. Maybe you went through a string of churches, but couldn't find one that was finally the right fit. Maybe you came to think you don't fit into this world at all. Congratulations on your discovery!

Let's say that again: you don't fit into this world at all! Don't feel bad about that. On the contrary, embrace that! If you belong to Messiah you must not fit into this world. In fact you will be hated by the world. Messiah Himself said this to His Father:

 

"I have given them your word. The world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that you would take them from the world, but that you would keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world even as I am not of the world." John 17:14-16

 

The real reason you don't fit in with the world never was because you were shorter, taller, fatter or skinnier than others. Nor was it because your ears, nose, chin, belly or butt was bigger or smaller than others. Nor was it because of any of the other factors we listed or didn't list above. All of those differences are perfectly normal to this world. They only served as an excuse to attack you, to hurt you, because you are hated. The reason you are hated by this world is because you are not of the world - not if you belong to Messiah.

 

Does that mean you will never fit in? To the world? Pray that you never fit in there. That does not mean there is no place for you to fit in. Messiah is building His nation. That is the place where your uniqueness is meant to be appreciated, not scorned. That is the place where the jewel that you are is meant to shine! The prophet Malachi wrote of these very days:

 

Then those who feared YHWH spoke one with another; and YHWH listened, and heard, and a book of memory was written before him, for those who feared YHWH, and who honored his name. "They shall be mine,” says YHWH of Hosts, “my own jewels in the day that I make, and I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him. Then you shall return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves Elohim and him who doesn’t serve him." Malachi 3:16-18
