Consider this:
Do you know the difference between 'the
narrative' and the truth?
'Truth' is solid reality - what actually is or
what actually happened. 2+2=4 is the truth, for example. You can test that
over and over again, from every possible direction, and it remains the solid
truth. No matter how much the truth is assailed, obfuscated or attacked it
remains the truth and will always remain so, whether it is accepted as truth
or not. When a person believes and acts on the truth they are acting in
accord with reality. This is what reasonable people call 'sanity.'
'The narrative' is meant to be accepted as
truth, and often is. It is the story created and disseminated for public
consumption by those with the influence to do so. It may include elements of
the truth - or it may be entirely fictitious.
The narrative is not about revealing the
truth, although it usually claims to be. The real purpose of the narrative
is to be more believable to the target group of people than the truth
itself, so that the narrative will be accepted as the truth - even though it
is just a story.
If the story requires people to accept that
2+2=5 it can be done. First, the judgment of the target group must be
undermined. If you are among the target group 'they' will try to convince you
that since you are not a professional mathematician you are not an accepted
expert, so are not qualified to understand how 2+2 now equals 5.
The next step is obvious. Next they will roll
out a list of accepted experts (with a smattering of movie stars and
celebrities thrown in) all of whom attest to the 'fact' that 2+2 is
now indeed 5. It matters not that there are other actual experts that will
refute the narrative, since those experts can simply be suppressed so that
their voices will not be heard.
Further, the official organizations that
oversee the intricacies of mathematics will step forward to certify the
findings of the experts that 2+2 is now 5, and that it is in the public
interest for all good citizens to support this new 'truth.' This makes it a
public good to accept that 2+2=5.
Of course, this implies the people that still
believe 2+2=4 are hopelessly out of date, clinging to old fashioned ideas
that have been debunked by the experts. They are standing in the way of
progress, so must be vilified by society, and punished as the worthless
scumbags they are now considered to be. At this point, 2+2 may as well
actually be 5, so far as the majority is concerned.
The truth is, only mindless fools accept such
a narrative as truth. Many who don't believe it pretend they do, however.
They don't want to be seen by society as part of the backward scumbag camp.
The social costs connected with that are just too much for them. So they go
along to get along.
