From Eliyahu

We live in a universe that was designed to support life. This, of course, is evidence of a Creator. As Scripture says:

“For since the creation of the world [the Creator’s] invisible attributes are clearly seen, being perceived by the things that are made, even His eternal power and divinity.” (Romans 1:20)

One of the most striking discoveries of modern science is not simply that the universe exists, or even that it is vast - but that it appears to be remarkably well-suited for life. From the structure of the cosmos down to the conditions on Earth itself, many features seem to fall within narrow ranges that allow living organisms to exist at all. Scientists have observed this. They call this phenomenon “fine-tuning”.

The idea is simple to state:

“If certain physical constants, cosmic conditions, or planetary parameters were even slightly different, life as we know it would be impossible.”

Why is this so?

A common misunderstanding is that fine-tuning refers to one or two lucky coincidences. In reality, it involves dozens of independent factors, all of which must fall within life-supporting ranges at the same time for life to exist. This is not just a few random factors.

What we are talking about here is a functioning system designed for a purpose. This system operates at multiple levels:

- Cosmic (the structure and laws of the universe)

- Galactic (our location in the Milky Way)

- Stellar (the properties of our Sun)

- Planetary (Earth’s mass, orbit, chemistry)

- Geological and atmospheric (plate tectonics, oceans, air)

It is not that any one factor makes life possible.

It is that all of them work together as a life-support system.

Before planets or stars were created, the universe itself had to be structured in a very particular way. The fundamental forces were essential to the plan. Life depends on a delicate balance among the four fundamental forces:

- Gravity

- Electromagnetism

- Strong nuclear force

- Weak nuclear force

If gravity were significantly stronger, stars would burn too fast.

If weaker, stars would never ignite.

If the strong nuclear force were slightly altered, atoms heavier than hydrogen could not form - or all matter would collapse instantly.

These are not adjustable features that arose later in the universe’s history. In other words, they are not part of an evolutionary process. They had to be built into the universe from the beginning.

Scientists say the universe is expanding, but at a carefully balanced rate. If expansion were faster, matter would disperse before galaxies could form. If slower, the universe would collapse back on itself.

The same universe that allows galaxies and planets to form also allows planets to remain stable. That is why our Earth is able to support life.

Even in a life-friendly universe, not every location is suitable for life. Earth resides in what astronomers sometimes call the galactic habitable zone.

Too close to the galactic center, and radiation from supernovae and black holes would sterilize the planet. Too far out, and heavy elements necessary for life would be scarce.

Our solar system lies in a relatively calm region of the Milky Way - stable, metal-rich, and quiet. This is not guaranteed by the existence of galaxies themselves; it is a further layer of suitability.

Our CreatorFine-tuned Universe

Not all stars are equal when it comes to supporting life. Our Sun is:

- Stable (not prone to violent flares)

- Long-lived (capable of billions of years of steady output)

- The right size (warms and lights, but does not overwhelm.)

Many stars burn too fast, fluctuate too much, or emit dangerous radiation. But the Sun provides a long, steady energy source that allows complex systems to develop and thrive.

Our planet is fine-tuned for life. Earth’s habitability depends on a remarkable convergence of planetary conditions.

Earth sits in the Sun’s habitable zone, where liquid water can exist. Its orbit is said to be nearly circular, avoiding extreme temperature swings. Slightly closer and the Earth would suffer from a runaway greenhouse effect. Slightly farther and the Earth would be global ice.

Earth is massive enough to hold an atmosphere, but not so massive that it becomes a gas giant. Just the right gravity holds air and water in place, while still allowing complex chemistry to occur at the surface.

Scientists say Earth’s unusually large Moon stabilizes our axial tilt, preventing chaotic climate swings. It also drives tides, and offers benefits we still do not fully understand.

Earth is not just positioned correctly - it is geologically alive. Moving plate tectonics recycle nutrients, regulate carbon dioxide, and prevent Earth from becoming either a frozen wasteland or a runaway greenhouse.

Our atmosphere is transparent to visible light (for photosynthesis) but blocks much harmful radiation. Its composition is finely balanced for respiration and climate regulation.

Earth’s magnetic field shields the surface from deadly solar radiation and prevents atmospheric erosion.

What I’ve laid out here is only an overview of a few of the factors that go into fine-tuning of the universe. There are so many more. The key insight here though, is this: Fine-tuning is not just ‘one knob’ - one dial set correctly -  it is many, set correctly to operate as a life-support system. It is many independent dials, governing different physical processes, all set within narrow life-supporting ranges - simultaneously. Change one, and all life dies. This cumulative nature is what gives fine-tuning its force.

How should we interpret this? Scientists agree on the facts of fine-tuning. The debate is about interpretation.

Some say this is simply a brute fact: the universe just happens to be this way by dumb chance. Since this conclusion defies logic (and math) others appeal to speculative multiverse theories, suggesting many universes exist and we inhabit a lucky one. Just a bigger dumb chance argument.

The fact is, creating a life-support system to keep people alive in space doesn’t just happen on its own. A lot of planning and work has gone into the issue of life support for Astronauts, producing elaborate systems that do not work nearly as well as our Earth supports all of us. Nobody would suggest those life-support systems for Astronauts just happened by chance. Surely, it is obvious that fine-tuning of the universe, and our corner of it, is intentional, and if intentional, it was our Creator who did the fine-tuning that is right now keeping all of us alive. Let us praise God!

“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, the Holy One, to receive the glory, the honor, and the power, for you created all things, and because of your desire they existed, and were created!” Revelation 4:11

The existence of our Creator is a fact too big to ignore. At the Areopagus in Athens the apostle, Paul, made his case about this to Greek philosophers of his day, saying of our Creator:

He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the surface of the earth, having determined appointed seasons, and the boundaries of their dwellings, that they should seek the Lord, if perhaps they might reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. For in him we live, and move, and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, "For we are also his offspring." Acts 17:26-28

This is another aspect of fine-tuning that is seldom mentioned. He has fine-tuned His universe in a way that reaches out to you, to know Him, if only you seek for Him. Here at Tsiyon we are glad to pass along what we have come to know from Him. I invite you to join us for our next live stream, to hear more. That's tonight at 8 Central, at Tsiyon.Net - and other popular video platforms. "For in him we live, and move, and have our being." Let's get to know Him better, together.
