The pace of change in today's world is accelerating like a runaway train, out of control. Nothing illustrates this more than the pace of automation. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already disrupting jobs: Microsoft cut 9,000 roles in 2025 citing AI, and Salesforce eliminated 4,000 customer service jobs. A Stanford study found AI caused a 13% decline in early-career jobs, and 55,000 layoffs were linked to AI in 2025. AI keeps improving at an exponential rate, becoming more capable of doing more jobs better than humans, much more cost-effectively. This will likely create a job crisis through the rest of the decade and beyond, possibly with dire effects on society.

However, even that is not the worst of it. The pairing of AI with robotics makes this picture even more alarming. I know - that sounds like science fiction, only its not. Amazon’s automation plans are at the center of the 2027 robot surge narrative. Leaked internal documents reveal a strategy to replace up to 600,000 U.S. jobs with robots by 2027, primarily in warehouses and logistics, as part of a $12.6 billion automation drive. This includes phasing out 160,000 new hires and automating 75% of its fulfillment network using advanced robots like Proteus and Sequoia. This is but one example. Other sectors are also seeing rapid integration. At the same time all of this is happening whistleblowers from the AI world keep telling us that this is a race to oblivion, and the powers that be are turning a blind eye to the dangers. 

This amounts to a "Dark Turn" from progress to explosion. We are no longer in an era of "gradual change." Nick Bostrom, a leading voice in AI ethics, warns of an "Intelligence Explosion" - a point where technology begins to improve itself so rapidly that human beings are left behind in a matter of hours. Bostrom calls this the "Black Ball" in the urn of discovery: a technology that, once pulled out, cannot be put back and inevitably leads to a "dark turn."

The Bible describes this same "acceleration" as birth pangs (Matthew 24:8). Just as labor pains increase in both frequency and intensity until the moment of delivery, our era is defined by a "doubling rate" of crisis. Whether it is the expiration of the New START nuclear treaty (Feb 2026) or the blurring of safety standards in AI labs, we are witnessing the "great rush" toward what the prophets called the Day of the Lord.

The prophet Daniel was told that in the "time of the end," knowledge would "increase." In the original Hebrew, the word shatit implies a frantic running to and fro, a surge that overflows its banks. You could call it “The Knowledge Explosion” (Daniel 12:4).

For 1,900 years since Messiah walked the earth "knowledge" grew linearly. A man in 1700 lived much like a man in 100 AD. But today, we are in a vertical spike.

• The Secular View: This is "The Singularity" - the moment man becomes like a god through his own data.
• The Biblical View: This is the "over-reach" of the Tower of Babel. In Genesis 11, God noted that "nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do."

We are seeing the removal of "restraint" in real-time. The "dark turn" Bostrom fears is simply the Biblical reality that knowledge without the fear of God leads to the "mystery of iniquity." When man’s power becomes "god-like" but his heart remains fallen, the result is not a utopia, but the "abomination of desolation." (2 Thess 2, Matt 24:15)

The trap of "total safety" is almost upon us. Because the secular world sees this rush toward oblivion, they are proposing a radical "fix": Total Surveillance. Bostrom and others suggest that to stop a single individual from using a "Black Ball" technology, the state must monitor every person, everywhere, at all times. Can you feel it? – That surveillance trap is slowly but surely tightening around us.
