Wisdom and Understanding in the History of Israel

When we bring together the passages that speak of wisdom and understanding, we see how deeply these gifts belong to the calling of Israel. They appear in the work of creation, the building of the sanctuary, obedience to Torah, the rule of kings, and the revelations given to Daniel. They lead us to Messiah and teach us how to live before YHWH. As we consider The Wise Will Understand, let us follow this testimony through Scripture.

The Creator is the Source of Wisdom

Job 12:13  With God is wisdom and might. He has counsel and understanding.

Jeremiah 10:12  He has made the earth by his power, he has established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding has he stretched out the heavens:

Jeremiah 51:15  He has made the earth by his power, he has established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding has he stretched out the heavens:

Jeremiah repeats the same testimony in his prophecy against Babylon. The empire that held Judah captive remained subject to the One who established the world. Wisdom and understanding belong first to YHWH. Israel could trust His purpose even when foreign kings seemed to control its future.

Israel was called to Manifest the Wisdom of  YHWH by Covenant Obedience

Deuteronomy 4:6  Keep therefore and do [His commandments]; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

Moses tells Israel its wisdom will become visible to the nations if they obey. The people must keep and do the statutes of YHWH. Their covenant life in the Land is to demonstrate His understanding and wisdom which He has given them. A nation operating in His wisdom, with the blessings that would bring to that nation, was meant to lead honest-hearted people of all nations to Him. Wisdom and understanding were to become a national witness through their obedience.

The Spirit Endowed the Builders of the Sanctuary with Wisdom

Exodus 31:3  I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all kinds of workmanship

Exodus 35:31  He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all kinds of workmanship

Exodus 36:1  Bezalel and Oholiab shall work with every wise-hearted man, in whom YHWH has put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all the work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that YHWH has commanded.

The first two passages describe Bezalel. The third includes Oholiab and the other craftsmen who built the Sanctuary. Wisdom and understanding took practical form in skilled hands doing the work YHWH commanded. The sanctuary required people who could understand His instructions and faithfully carry them out.

Wisdom and understanding are not only for what some would label spiritual activities. These are also imparted for all kinds of practical work. Their craftsmanship was part of Israels worship. The whole point is to bring His wisdom into our entire lives.

Wisdom in the Kingdom and Daily Life

As life in the Land developed, wisdom and understanding were available from YHWH in government, sanctuary service, and the instruction of ordinary people. The same gifts that equipped the wilderness craftsmen were needed in all of the affairs of the kingdom. Their source remained YHWH.

Solomon Receives a Gift for his Calling

1 Kings 4:29  God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and very great understanding, even as the sand that is on the seashore.

The wisdom of Solomon was given by God. The king needed wisdom and understanding to govern the people entrusted to him. This verse presents the greatness of the gift. Unfortunately, some who are greatly gifted can fall into taking liberties they should not. This reminds us that receiving wisdom does not remove the continuing responsibility to obey the Giver.

Skill Serves the Temple

1 Kings 7:14  He was the son of a widow of the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a worker in brass; and he was filled with wisdom and understanding and skill, to work all works in brass. He came to king Solomon, and performed all his work.

This is the craftsman Hiram, whom Solomon brought from Tyre for the Temple work. His wisdom and understanding enabled him to shape brass for the sanctuary. History of the nation again brings spiritual purpose and skilled workmanship together. Serving YHWH in any capacity calls for careful, capable work.

Understanding Must be Sought and Received

Proverbs 1:2  to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding

Proverbs 2:2  So as to turn your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding

Proverbs 2:6  For YHWH gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding

Proverbs teaches us to listen and apply our hearts. Understanding involves a willing response to instruction. We seek it, yet we also acknowledge that YHWH gives it. His mouth is the source of the knowledge that guides His people.

Wisdom Belongs in the Heart

Proverbs 14:33  Wisdom rests in the heart of one who has understanding, and is even made known in the inward part of fools.

Wisdom resting in the heart describes something settled in the innermost place in the person. The understanding we gain should shape our judgment and conduct. Repeating wise words is only the beginning; those words must become part of how we live. Fools may know what is wisdom in a given situation, but they reject it to go their own way.

Truth Must be Valued and Kept

Proverbs 23:23  Buy the truth, and do not sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding.

Wisdom and understanding are joined here with truth and discipline. These will come at a cost. Yet, we are to value them enough to acquire them and refuse to surrender them. Discipline may require correction, patience, and a change of direction. A teachable heart accepts that cost because truth is precious.

These passages speak to the whole community. Kings and craftsmen need wisdom, and so do those learning to live faithfully from day to day. The calling of Israel gives each one a reason to seek wisdom and understanding,  to put them to work.

Above all, we can not hope to grasp the treasures of YHWH laid up for the righteous in Scripture without seeking wisdom and understanding from our Father. As the angel said to Daniel: Only the wise will understand.
